Summary of Day 4
by Janina Sjöström

The fundamental practice in Art of Hosting is the circle practice. The circle practice is the mother of all practices. There are circles within you – and when you become a real practitioner you can feel those circles within your being.

It is the final day and this is how Phil frames our four days of growing and growling together. He talks about the role of the hosts, the stewards, the apprentices, and the importance of the organizing team.

We all continue to be in learning…

And so do we, the participants in the training.

The practice of day four is about Designing for Wiser Action.
My first group has a host with a complicated problem and the group there to support her are complicated people. This creates a challenge for everyone around the table and I learn some really good lessons:
·      Value the resistance.
·      When trying to gain trust in a meeting, share when you don´t know everything.
·      Do not lecture – put the focus instead of what problem is being solved.
·      Find allies in complicated situations.

The second group I join are more focused on supporting the host to explore the possibilities of his project – and a great flow helps the group design a meeting around how to invade and occupy a small castle in Copenhagen with creativity.

Finalizing the practice – there are some tears when the hosts are presenting the outcome of their meetings, tears of happiness and relief. People express their gratitude for the support, for being touched, for people sharing their experience, and they are thankful for the new ideas and new friendships.

I feel seen.
This is what support feels like.
I have my place in my meeting.
It is possible to do work and fall in love with those people.

In the practice of Designing for Wiser Action it becomes very clear to me the importance of framing the purpose of the meeting. No matter which method you use – the question is the answer. Asking the right question to yourself and to your participants is crucial for the success of the outcome. Mary-Alice expressed this during her closure statement:

Be careful of the question you ask, it might open something.

She invites us to keep up our practice and to keep in touch with the community.

After the powerful manifesto shared by those who were listening deeply to the calling question, a beautiful poem moves us to checkout. We close our eyes, let go of our time together in Karlskrona and I move into a future that looks much brighter than it did when I came here. The last sentence of my story from these four days will be:

Remember to breathe…

Manifesto
by the Calling Question Harvest Team

  1.  I will be aware of who I am, of my values and where I come from
  2.  I will acknowledge the divisions within me and near me
  3.  I am starting from a place of authenticity as authenticity is the foundation of trust
  4.  I will be aware of the need to bridge the divisions
  5.  I will find the courage to:
  • Not look away
  • Take responsibility
  • Listen to different stories
  • Share my story
  • Take action
  6.  I will make bridging divisions my intentional practice

And so I invite you to do.

Closing Poem: An Ode to The Hosting Artists
by Gabriel Neira Voto

Conversations  are our medium of transformation, to see each other before it is too late.
A constant dance of hierarchy and networking, setting trust tentpoles to dismiss the hate.

Are you willing to really listen to me, so I can be and not exist merely?
Ready to learn about me, her and him, not only when you’re curious, but with your learning edge pushed acutely?
Or is it easier without me, her, them? Easier to fear and hate if to your home we travel?
Won’t you cook with what you have? That’s confusion on a higher level!

Doesn't work for me no more. I’m neutral as the swiss fellow.
Come, sit and share. Be you white, red, black, yellow.

We gather with endless possibilities co-sketched.
Ready and willing to sit as one, even in face of the unexpected.

Most valuable currencies of our culture, the stories we share.
We feel warmth and joy, even when the silent is there.

Yes, that’s true, we know nothing about the pigeon's flight norm.
And we can’t really explain why it’s Vatican, corn...corn...corn.

We just want to be as a whole! Why is that so uncanny?
Want to spark bright lights to mean so much for so many.

On the fool's day we designed wise.
And playful frisbees merged with the sunrise

A golden smile reflected in the sea, nourishing our bodies and souls, you and me.
A chain of golden words, tunes of an emerging band;
Tribe dances, deep conexion, an unheard trust in hand.

And so we close this breath collectively, rubber hitting the ground back home.
So eager to do together what we could never do alone.
